Office of the National Coordinator making Health IT safer: 5 things to know

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology released its Health IT Safety Center Roadmap, which aims to make healthcare safer for patients, according to Healthcare IT News.

Here are five things to know:

1. By educating the public about safe health IT, the ONC wants to create a "culture of safety," according to Healthcare IT News.

2. The ONC hopes to create a national Health IT Safety Center, with the help of RTI International and a task force.

3. The task force is composed of 22 people who represent private stakeholders and five people who represent Federal agencies. The Center would aid in creating an open space for cooperation and collaboration among private stakeholders and the government.

4. According to the Roadmap Task Force outline, the group developed four focus areas: collaboration on solutions to address health IT safety; improvement of identification and sharing of information on health IT-related safety and hazards; improved reporting on evidence of health IT safety; promotion of health IT safety education and competency.

5. It is estimated that funding the Center for five years would cost $5.1 million to $5.9 million dollars.

As written in the Roadmap Task Force outline: "The vision for the proposed national Health IT Safety Center is simple: safer systems, better care using health IT."'
