Nearly 50% of Hispanics believe antibiotics treat colds — 5 things to know

A large portion of U.S. adults, including nearly half of Hispanics, believe antibiotics will ease the symptoms of a cold, according to Medical Daily.

Here are five things to know:

1. A new study found Hispanic consumers are almost three times as likely to obtain antibiotics from a source other than a prescribing physician or use antibiotics left from a previous illness.

2. The CDC compared surveys of more than 7,000 U.S. consumers in general to a set of surveys directed at 1,000 Hispanic consumers.

3. The reports found almost 50 percent of Hispanic consumers believe antibiotics can treat a cold compared to 25 percent of the general public.

4. In many countries, including some in Central and South America, many antibiotics do not require a prescription, which may help explain why some Hispanic individuals have different attitudes about how to get antibiotics and how they should be used.

5. Pediatric physicians reported they often felt pressure to give antibiotics for colds.
