Leaf Healthcare's wearable monitor helps with at-risk ulcer patient turning: 6 observations

Leaf Healthcare released white paper on a wireless, wearable patient monitor that alerts caregivers turning schedules for patients at risk of pressure ulcers.

Here are six observations:

1. The Leaf Patient Monitoring System helps with the timely completion of routine preventive actions, like turning patients at risk for pressure ulcers.

2. The device responds to the recommendation from the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel about repositioning patients at risk of pressure ulcers, as it allows nurses to quickly pinpoint which patients are in need of caregiver-assisted turns.

3. The wireless monitor optimizes and coordinates turning schedules for a group of patients so nurses can prioritize individual patient needs.

4. A clinical trial at Chino Valley Medical Center experienced successful results when using the monitor.

5. The Leaf system is a small, lightweight wearable sensor that monitors a patient's position and movements. The system alerts caregivers to specific patient needs.

6. It has been FDA-cleared.

James Lally, CMO, of chief medical office of Chino Valley Medical Center, praised the monitor and said it will "help us to maintain a pressure ulcer-free performance goal while significantly improving staff productivity by allowing clinicians to focus on those patients requiring turn assistance."
