Lawmakers Want Investigation Into All Ohio VA Facilities Following New Hepatitis B Cases

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) are calling on Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to create a task force that would investigate infections stemming from a dentist at Dayton (Ohio) VA Medical Center, according to a Dentistry IQ news report.

According to the news report, Dwight Pemberton, DDS, failed to change gloves or sterilize instruments between patient cases from Jan. 1992-July 2010. At least 535 patients were put at risk of obtaining hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV infection. In April, two former patients tested positive for hepatitis B. While further testing will be conducted to ascertain whether the infections stemmed from Dr. Pemberton's care, it is possible the source of the infection may never be determined.

Earlier this year, lawmakers have pushed a statewide review of all VA facilities in Ohio.  Sen. Brown and Rep. Turner are asking for a regional task force to investigate Dayton VA Medical Center as part of that overall review.
