How common are cardiac complications among hip fracture patients? 5 key notes

Orthopedic surgeons should be aware of cardiac disease history and atherosclerotic conditions in risk stratifying patients to prevent cardiac complications, according to a study published in International Orthopaedics.

Here are five key notes:

1. Researchers examined 27,441 patients with hip fractures from 2006 to 2013.

2. Cardiac complications were defined as cardiac arrests or myocardial infarctions occurring within 30 days after surgery.

3. Of the 27,441 patients, 594 had cardiac complications within 30 days of the surgery.

4. There was no significant association with respect to type of hip fracture surgery and adverse cardiac event rates.

5. After multivariate analysis, dialysis use and histories of peripheral vascular disease; stroke; COPD; and cardiac disease were significantly predictive of postoperative cardiac events in all hip fracture patients.
