CDC issues vaccine guidance for adults — 6 things to know

The CDC recently issued new recommendations for adults for hepatitis B, influenza and HPV vaccines, abc News reports.

Here are six things to know:

1. The CDC advises healthy adults to receive two doses of the serotype B meningitis vaccine, as opposed to three. The agency recommends three doses in the cases of meningitis outbreak of if a patient has a higher risk of contracting meningitis.

2. The guidelines also advise patients to obtain the HPV vaccine for two doses five months apart if a patient starts the vaccines before age 15. If a patient starts the vaccine after age 15, the CDC recommends three doses.

3. The CDC advises using the common infection flu vaccine, which studies show is more effective than the nasal mist.

4. In the report, the CDC said one core reasons payers fail to cover vaccinations is they opt to cover acute or chronic conditions, which they deem as more pressing than vaccines for preventative conditions.

5. Physicians may also prove to be a barrier to vaccine adherence as 25 percent of internists said age-based vaccination recommendations for adults were not easy to follow. Twenty-nine percent of internists reported vaccine recommendations based on medical conditions were also difficult to follow.

6. Based on these obstacles, the CDC advises providers use patient reminders to improve vaccination adherence.
