Oklahoma Governor Approves Health Insurance Rule Change
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has approved an emergency rule that eliminates birth as a qualifying event for individual health insurance coverage, according to an Insurance News Net report.
The rule, written by state Insurance Commissioner John Doak's office, would amend a rule adopted this summer by eliminating birth as a qualifying event for individual coverage. The proposal would also eliminate a provision that states nothing shall alter the ability of an application to gain a child-only policy outside of the open enrollment period if a qualifying event occurs.
Gov. Fallin signed the rule to draw health insurance companies back into the Oklahoma market. According to the report, some companies offering child health insurance policies have left the market as a result of healthcare reform. The rule is intended to loosen some state regulations and bring insurance companies back into the market.
