Anesthesiologists identify at-risk children for sleep-disordered breathing prior to surgery — 5 key facts

An article published by the AANA Journal, “Snoring, Trouble Breathing, Un-Refreshed (STBUR) Screening Questionnaire to Reduce Perioperative Respiratory Adverse Events in Pediatric Surgical Patients: A Quality Improvement Project,” outlines the risks at play before or during surgery, particularly for children, according to newswise.

Here are five notes:

1. Many parents underestimate their child's sleep-disordered breathing condition, leading to a lack of awareness about the risks associated with surgery.

2. Without awareness about a SDB condition, children could face a series of complications including death if they receive too much pain medication.

3. Anesthesia professionals including Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists have the optimal position to uncover undiagnosed conditions including SDB before surgery.

4. The article provides five key questions to help CRNAs identify SDB prior to surgery.

5. The likelihood of developing a perioperative respiratory adverse event increases three-fold in the presence of any three STBUR symptoms and increases by 10-fold when all five symptoms are present.
