42% of Anesthesiologists Say They Won't Drop Poorly-Paying Payers

Anesthesiologists are still more likely to accept all payers than follow the increasing trend of dropping poorly reimbursing payers, according to the Medscape Anesthesiologist Compensation Report: 2013.

Around 42 percent said they do not plan to drop payers that reimburse poorly; 22 percent of those anesthesiologists cited needing all payers while the remaining 20 percent said they thought dropping poorly-paying payers was inappropriate behavior.

By contrast, only around 21 percent said they would drop poorly paying insurer. When it comes to Medicare — known as one of the worse payers — only 2 percent of anesthesiologists plan to drop current Medicare/Medicaid patients and 6 percent plan to stop taking new Medicare/Medicaid patients.

According to the report, 67 percent of anesthesiologists reported they would continue taking new and current Medicare/Medicaid patients while the remaining 25 percent hadn't decided.
