A health insurance firm in Germantown, Wis., and its parent company have agreed to pay $4.8 million to settle whistleblower claims of healthcare fraud, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report.

Abri Health Plan and its parent company, Universal American Financial Corp. of Missouri, faced whistleblower complaints that the company misrepresented its Medicare Part C coverage plans by withholding key information and signing on some customers without their consent.

In the settlement agreement, federal prosecutors contend that Abri sales agents paid physicians for referrals, paid clients to sign up and misled clients about the scope of coverage. The defendants deny the allegations.

The two whistleblowers, both from Wisconsin, will share more than $900,000 of the settlement amount.
