What Did a Physician Make in 1964?

The father of Tom Pliura, MD, JD, CEO of zChart, was a “very busy old-time general practitioner in Le Roy, Ill.” The younger Dr. Pliura was recently going through some family files and found an income statement for his father’s practice.

“In October 1964, he would have been 44 years old, with a well-established and busy medical practice,” says Tom Pluira. “The attached file provides a look back at what a busy general practitioner would have been making in Central Illinois at the time (1964). This was before the government federalized our system with the program known as Medicare. It was of interest to me, and it may be of interest to others.”

According to the income and expense statement, Vytautas Pliura, MD, made $7,706.50 in October 1964, and had earned $70,686.20 for the year thus far. According to Measuring Worth, using the Consumer Price Index, Vytautas would have earned about $51,494.72 in the same October month had it been 2007, and about $472,324.14 for the first 10 months of 2007.
