Avastin, which prevents blood-vessel growth, is used to treat both wet age-related macular degeneration in the eye and for cancer.

The VA decision comes after FDA advisers rejected using the drug in breast cancer because of the risk of deadly bleeding. Also, macular degeneration patients at a VA facility in Los Angeles were blinded after being injected with the drug.
