Major companies include Community Health Systems, Tenet Healthcare, Trinity Health and Universal Health Services, according to the report. The industry is fragmented: The 50 largest companies generate about 30 percent of revenue.

According to the report, demand is linked in the industry to the number of people receiving medical care, and profitability of individual centers depends on efficient operations and good marketing. Companies that operate multiple locations may enjoy some economies of scale in purchasing and marketing.

Most centers have from two to six operating rooms, according to the report.
