This algorithm will allow researchers to develop and test highly specific drugs to treat conditions such as chronic pain to epilepsy. The findings are published in the Dec. 12 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
Voltage-gated sodium channels are embedded in the plasma membranes of nerve and muscle cells and transmit pain signals and are the site of action of local anesthetics. The new algorithm allows researchers to track the changes when the channels are at rest or actively transmitting a signal. Previously only data for active transmitting was available.
