Investigators from the state Agency for Health Care Administration conducted a review of Sarasota Memorial Hospital after a patient who was admitted for vaginal bleeding lost twin fetuses while receiving care at the hospital. According to the report, investigators found physicians and nurses failed to perform critical blood-sugar tests in a timely manner. They discovered other deficiencies, including failure to inform the patient of risks of a pelvic exam and failure to immediately respond to serious complications, such as profuse bleeding, according to the report.

State investigators analyzed this and 10 other cases involving patients with vaginal bleeding. Of these cases, eight cases showed errors, with the most prominent errors stemming from failure to document vital information. State regulators forwarded their findings to CMS, who in turn asked the hospital to submit a corrective action plan.
If Sarasota Memorial Hospital does not submit and implement the corrective action plan, its Medicare status may be revoked.
