Supply Chain Leaders Express Great Concern About Impact of Health Reform

A survey of 200 supply chain leaders by IDN Summit and Expo has found most respondents are concerned about the health reform law’s impact on the supply chain and healthcare as a whole, according to a news release from IDN Summit and Expo.

Forty-nine percent of respondents indicated reform will have a net negative impact on the healthcare supply chain.

 

Fifty percent said reform will have a net negative impact on the U.S. healthcare system as a whole.

 

The top five aspects of reform that had the leaders most concerned (listed with the percentage of respondents indicating the issues was extremely concerning) were:

 

1. Reduced reimbursement (93 percent)

2. New excise of 2.3 percent on medical devices (63 percent)

3. Long-term impact of commercial payor contracting strategies (62 percent)

4. Payment reductions for preventable redadmissions (55 percent)

5. Payment reductions for healthcare acquired conditions (54 percent)

 

The respondents noted that reform could brings some opportunities, highlighting incentives for hospitals and physicians to collaborate on patient care, greater comparative effectiveness research and new funding for health IT as those areas they find most important.
