Childhood Anxiety, Other Adversities Linked to Pain in Adulthood

People who experience anxiety or other adversities in childhood are at increased risk for chronic pain in adulthood, according to a report in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

Researchers followed individuals who experienced the following childhood adversities: abuse, neglect, loss of a parent through death or other causes, divorce, parental substance abuse, parental criminal behavior, family violence and being poor.

 

These childhood experiences were associated with three chronic pain conditions in adulthood: osteoarthritis, chronic back or neck pain and frequent or severe headache.
