The guidelines are the culmination of two years of research and analysis by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guidelines recommend and specify 13 key issues of preoperative care for the elderly:
1. Cognitive impairment and dementia
2. Decision-making capacity
3. Postoperative delirium
4. Alcohol and substance abuse
5. Cardiac evaluation
6. Pulmonary evaluation
7. Functional status, mobility and fall risk
8. Frailty
9. Nutritional status
10. Medication management
11. Patient counseling
12. Preoperative testing
13. Patient-family and social support system
The joint guidelines are published in the October issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
