ACS NSQIP is a quality improvement resource that includes a nationally benchmarked database of surgical outcomes. For the study, outcomes for seven complex surgical procedures at California hospitals enrolled in the program were compared with outcomes at California hospitals that were not enrolled.

An analysis of more than 1.18 million surgical patients at 227 hospitals from 1995 to 2009 showed significantly lower 30-day mortality rates and one-year mortality rates at ACS NSQIP hospitals than at non-ACS NSQIP hospitals. In addition, while both types of hospitals improved surgical outcomes over time, the ACS NSQIP hospitals improved faster, according to the study.
