California Department of Health Official Encourage Hospitals to Adopt Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs

Following reports that a multiresistant form of Klebsiella pneumoniae had been found in Los Angeles County medical facilities, Kavita Trivedi, MD, medical epidemiologist at the California Department of Public Health’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Initiative, spoke to the LA Times about what healthcare providers can do to stop the spread of the “superbugs.”

Dr. Trivedi said one critical step to stopping the spread of antimicrobial organisms is creating an antimicrobial stewardship program. Such a program makes certain that every patient receives the right dose of the right antibiotic or agent through proper means. Dr. Trivedi adds open communication between physicians and patients is crucial. Not every patient’s condition warrants an antibiotic, and unnecessarily overprescribing antibiotics can eventually cause organisms to become resistant.
