Researchers at the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology added that neuroticism tends to be more pronounced in patients with irritable bowel syndrome and is a risk factor for chronic, unexplained pain in IBS.

The study may help explain the greater incidence of people with higher neuroticism visiting outpatient pain clinics and exhibiting a greater risk for developing chronic pain conditions.
