Researchers compared adverse event counts from voluntary reporting, AHRQ indicators and the Global Trigger Tool for 795 patient records. Voluntary reporting identified four events, AHRQ indicators 35 and the Global Trigger Tool 354.
The authors suggest using the Global Trigger Tool to detect adverse events. They propose incorporating the tool into electronic health record systems to simplify the otherwise resource-intensive method.
