According to the report, a knee replacement surgery, which typically costs around $20,000, provided one year of better quality life to elderly patients. The study found the cost for the year of benefit was approximately $18,300, which falls below the $50,000 per year of better-quality life threshold commonly considered cost-effective.

The study used Medicare claims and other data and statistical modeling to determine the results.
