Study: Covered Stents for Pseudoaneurysms in AV Grafts Increase Infection Risk

A study presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting found an association between the use of covered stents for treatment of pseudoaneurysms in arteriovenous grafts and an increased risk of graft infection, according to a Renal & Urology News report.

Of 258 cases where stents were used to treat pseudoaneurysms in AV grafts, 10.1 percent of the grafts were excised because of infection. In the cases where a covered stent was used, however, the infection rate was 41 percent. Similarly, of 109 excisions of grafts due to infection, almost one-third had been treated with a covered stent.

Lead investigator Charles Kim, MD, suggests a need for new strategies to decrease infection in this technique or avoidance of the technique.
