For the study, researchers from the Sinai Hospital in Baltimore retrospectively analyzed the changing epidemiological trends of patients with C. difficile-associated diarrhea, who were admitted to an acute-care hospital from January 2005 to December 2012. Their researchers showed that of 258 toxin-positive CDAD patients, 20.6 percent were hospital acquired; 46.1 percent were long-term facility acquired and 33.3 percent were community acquired.

The researchers suggest the way CDAD is acquired is shifting from the traditional hospital setting to the community or long-term care facility.
