Chronic Pain Treatments Should Be Evidence-Based

Due to continuing uncertainty on how to treat chronic pain, physicians should base treatment on evidence-based studies and not rely on patient testimonials, according to an FASEB Journal report.

For example, some well known treatments for chronic pain from Lyme disease have been shown to have little usefulness, wrote Phillip J. Baker, PhD, executive director of the American Lyme Disease Foundation.

 

Further, unapproved and undocumented treatments are usually not covered by health insurance, forcing a significant financial burden on the patient.
