Here are statistics on the distribution of active physicians in patient care by specialty for 2005, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 citing the American Medical Association’s Physician Characteristics and Distribution in the US, 2007.

Family medicine and general practice — 12.3 percent
Surgical specialties — 10.8 percent
Pediatrics — 7.5 percent
Obstetrics and gynecology — 5.5 percent
Anesthesiology — 5.2 percent
Psychiatry — 5.1 percent
All other specialties — 38.5 percent
