The study compared the particle and microbiological emission rates of space suits and standard surgical clothing in a simulated surgical environment. The results indicated statistically significant increases in both PER and MER when space suits were used compared with standard surgical clothing.
The study’s finding provide mechanistic evidence to support increased prosthetic joint infection rates when space suits, rather than standard surgical clothing, are used.
