Senate Committee Considers Tightening Law on Imported Drugs

Several members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee called for tightening a 1938 law so that the FDA could improve the safety of imported drugs, according to a Star-Ledger report.

Deborah Autor, a deputy FDA commissioner, told the committee the agency currently has limited ability to conduct regular inspections of foreign suppliers or to block suspected drugs.

 

Committee members referred to a 2007 case when adulterated heparin reached the U.S. market from China.
