Senate Health Reform Bill Requires Non-Profit Hospitals to Write Charity Policies

The health reform bill recently released by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) would require non-profit hospitals to adopt written policies on financial assistance to low-income patients and widely publicize them, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.

The specific proposal comes from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who, in a statement, did not rule out the possibility of requiring a minimum percentage for charity care and community benefit in the future, saying it needs “more study.”

Sen. Grassley also stated that congressional review of federal tax-exemption laws for non-profit hospitals was four decades overdue.
