Risks associated with PCI are highest 24-48 hours following the procedure, according to the report. Short- and long-term outcomes after the surgery have improved because of the evolution in device technology and pharmacotherapy.
The researchers examined the prevalence of same-day discharge among older individuals following PCI, as well as the rates of death or rehospitalization. The study included data from more than 107,000 patients ages 65 or older who underwent elective PCI procedures between Nov. 2004 and Dec. 2008.
The researchers found no significant differences in rates of death or rehospitalization at two or 30 days for patients discharged on the same day.
