According to the report from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4), the number of surgery centers in Pennsylvania is growing, as are the profits of ASCs in the state.

PHC4 says that 17 new ASC opened in the state between June 2007 and May 2008, bringing the statewide total to 245.

The statewide total profit margin for ASC rose 3.9 points in fiscal year 2007 from 20.85 percent in fiscal year 2006 to 24.74 percent.

"While this most recent growth in new ASCs is not as brisk as the prior 12-month period when 28 new facilities opened, it still reflects the ongoing outpatient surgery trend," said David R. Kreider, PHC4’s chairman and vice president for operations and treasurer for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, according to a news release from PHC4 about the report. "ASCs, which outnumber the state’s acute care hospitals, continue to perform remarkably well."

The report also includes data on long-term acute care hospitals, specialty hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals and state hospitals.
