Due largely to the passage of key legislation in 2011 to crack down on illegitimate operations and “pill mills,” the number of pain clinics has been reduced from 921 in June 2010 to 444 in June 2012.
Most of the registered pain management clinics have passed the state’s Division of Medical Quality inspection, which includes verification of the clinic’s managing physician, reviews of medical records, and reviews of patient prescriptions and referrals for addiction. There are 77 new pain clinics currently undergoing inspection.
