Medical device sales representatives will have less access to physicians under accountable care organizations, according to a report by the Alliance Life Sciences Consulting Group.

“Manufacturer access to ACO physicians will likely be governed by restricted access, as the ACO model implies that physicians will spend more time with each patient and less time with sales reps,” said the report, a white paper titled, “Accountable Care Organization Clinical Integration: What the new framework means for Drug and Medical Device Manufacturers and the Market.”

The report, which mostly dealt with drugmakers, also predicted ACOs may form partnerships with manufacturers, under which the companies would help educate ACO physicians about appropriate use of products and would help with patient compliance and education programs.
