Recycling Surgical Implants After Cremation a Growing Trend

Most of the surgical implants in the world end up in a scrap yard after a person is cremated, but Dutch company OrthoMetals has been recycling the metal for almost 15 years, according to a PRI’s The World report.

However, the metal surgical implants are recycled for the metal and are not implanted into other people — which co-founders Ruud Verberne and Jan Gabriëls, MD, say is a key point. Currently, the company works with crematoriums in 15 countries — including the U.S. — and recycles more than 250 tons a year.
