For their study, researchers conducted a retrospective study of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample. The results showed patients with HAIs experienced higher mortality, length of stay and cost compared to patients without HAIs. For example, sepsis patients had a six-fold high risk of mortality compared to patients without HAIs. Also, patients with HAIs had costs that were at least twice as high as patients without HAIs.
