Dotty Bollinger: Our facility has a formulary committee, which is an interdisciplinary committee that focuses on materials and equipment we use to do our jobs every day. The committee is made up of several subject matter experts, including our nurse, a physician and our materials manager.
As new things become available in the marketplace, surgeons love the latest and the greatest. Whatever our physicians propose to bring in is always reviewed by the formulary committee. The proposed equipment is accepted based on its scientific value and performance value. Then, we measure whether that purchase financially makes sense and whether it positively impacts the outcomes of the patient. Our hope is that through the formulary process, we’re talking on an intellectual level and not an emotional level.
