The owner of a medical equipment company in the Houston area has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for her role in a Medicare fraud scheme, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.
Doris Vinitski, the owner of Onward Medical Supply in Sugar Land, Texas, began billing Medicare for fraudulent durable medical equipment in 2003. She admitted to paying kickbacks — sometimes $1,000 per patient — to recruiters who brought patients to her supply company. She then billed Medicare for DME that these patients did not need or did not receive, such as power wheelchairs and orthotic devices.
According to court documents, the scheme resulted in more than $2 million in fraudulent Medicare billings.
