Plastic Surgery Procedures Drop 2% in 2009

Plastic surgery procedures dropped 2 percent in 2009, at 9.99 million compared with 10.26 million in 2008, according to statistics from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Total surgical cosmetic procedures were 1.47 million, down 17 percent from 1.77 million in 2008. Nonsurgical cosmetic procedures increased in 2009 to 8.52 million, up from 8.49 million in 2008.

Americans spent nearly $10.5 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2009, according to the ASAPS. Most surgeries (58 percent) were performed in an office facility; 23 percent were performed in free-standing surgicenters and 18 percent were performed in the hospital.
