The new rules, which went into effect Apr. 1, reduce the period of time physicians have to bill retroactively for services from 27 months to 30 days. Physicians who do not meet the deadline will be at risk for being denied reimbursement for their services. Additionally, CMS now requires that physicians alert contractors of a change in practice location within 30 days, or risk expulsion from Medicare for up to two years.
The new polices were originally slated to begin Jan. 1, but CMS extended the effective date after the American Medical Association and the Medical Group Management Association voiced concern over the changes. The AMA fears that physicians will be punished for errors that are not their fault and is asking CMS to reinstate the 90-day address change timeframe, according to the report.
