Physicians Could Apologize Without Fear Under Proposed Michigan Law

Under proposed Michigan legislation, physicians could express regrets to patients without fear the words would be used against them in a malpractice case, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press.

Bill sponsor Rep. Jim Marleau (R-Lake Orion) said the bill had a better chance of passing due to the recent healthcare reform law, noting a similar policy at University of Michigan cut lawsuits by 40 percent.

Michigan is one of 15 states without extra legal protections for physicians who want to apologize to a patient or family.
