Thirteen percent reported membership in single specialty private groups and 7 percent were in multispecialty groups. Twenty-four percent said they were in groups owned by a hospital and 25 percent reported hospital employment.

The top reason for choosing employment — cited by 38 percent of survey respondents — was less risk and financial security. Another 29 percent reported fewer administrative responsibilities as their top reason for employment and 19 percent chose employment for better hours and work/life balance.

Among those who were employed, 58 percent said they liked not having to deal with the business of running a practice the most, followed by 45 percent who appreciated not having to deal with insurers or billing.

However, there were also several aspects of employment physicians didn’t like. The limited influence in decision-making topped the list, followed closely by the more limited income potential.
