Insulin Pens Should be for Ambulatory Care, Not Hospitals, ISMP Says

Insulin pens should be used in only ambulatory care settings, not hospitals, according to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices’ Medication Safety Alert! newsletter.

Due to continuing patient safety problems, ISMP suggests hospitals stop using insulin pens in an inpatient setting, as they were originally intended for ambulatory care.
