APIC conducted the 2013 CDI Pace of Progress survey in January 2013, and 1,087 APIC members responded. The survey showed that 70 percent of infection preventionists have added CDI interventions since March 2010, but only 42 percent had reductions in healthcare facility-associated CDI rates in that time period. Furthermore, only 21 percent of respondents have hired more infection prevention staff to combat CDI at their facility.

Here are some other key data points from the survey:
• 92 percent of respondents have increased the emphasis on environmental cleaning and equipment decontamination practices since March 2010.
• 64 percent of respondents use observation instead of monitoring technologies to assess cleaning effectiveness.
• 14 percent of respondents do nothing to monitor room cleaning.
• 60 percent of respondents have antimicrobial stewardship programs at their facilities this year, while only 52 percent had such programs in 2010.
