A former physician from Knoxville, Tenn., has been sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to healthcare fraud and failure to file tax returns, according to a Knoxville News Sentinel report.
Allen R. Foster, MD, used a fast-track system for his pain management patients, who often received prescriptions without seeing a provider. The scheme occurred at his various practices in Morristown, Tenn. and Knoxville from 2006-2007.
Dr. Foster surrendered his license to practice medicine and must pay restitution under the terms of his plea agreement, which includes more than $65,000 to TennCare, more than $74,000 to Medicare and more than $597,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
