Dr. Cherf talked about the demand of orthopedics, new payment models and the long-term future of the specialty. He said the overall demand for orthopedics is very strong. The sports medicine and overall spine industry is seeing growth, but leaders must manage overutilization and technology costs, particularly for implants, according to Dr. Cherf. He also described the trend of more procedures, such as total joints, being shifted from the inpatient to outpatient setting.
Dr. Cherf described the transition-in-progress of being paid based on volume to being paid based on high quality at low cost. New payment systems include bundled payments, limited capitation and episodic payments. Other changes orthopedics may see in the future are controlled utilization, risk-sharing models and greater transparency, according to Dr. Cherf.
