N.Y. Health Commissioner Clarifies State’s Position on ASCs

New York Health Commissioner Richard Daines, MD, wrote a letter to the Public Health Council and the State Hospital Review and Planning Council to clarify the state’s position on new surgery centers, according to a report in Crain’s Health Pulse.

In the letter, Dr. Daines said that the state saw no need for a moratorium on independent ASCs and said that the health department would develop a policy that would promote the development of new ambulatory centers while protecting the “financial viability” of hospitals, according to the report.

The letter rebukes New York hospitals that oppose surgery centers because they present direct competition. Dr. Daines said that the allegations by hospitals that new ASCs in their areas would affect their bottom lines are not sufficient evidence to block the approval of the new centers.
