Number of Outpatient Surgery Centers Growing in Pennsylvania

A new report from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council found that the number of outpatient surgery centers in Pennsylvania, along with the centers’ total margins, are growing, according to a report in the Pittsburgh Business Times.

The report found that between June 2008 and May 2009, 17 ASCs opened in Pennsylvania. According to the report, utilization of surgery centers also increased 65 percent over the past eight years.

Total margins for ASCs were up 1.75 percentage points in fiscal year 2008 at 26.6 percent, up from 24.31 percent in FY 2007, according to the report. Average operating margins dropped 0.13 percent in FY 2008 to 8.90 percent from 9.03 percent in FY 2007.
