Berton Forman, MD, and his lawyers allege that Sutter Hospitals, a 24-hospital chain in northern California, and two PPOs, MultiPlan and Private Healthcare Systems, overcharged patients by doubling or tripling bills or even charging for anesthesia that was never provided.

Dr. Forman could make millions of dollars if he wins the lawsuits, according to the report. Dr. Forman alleges that Sutter Hospitals passed bogus anesthesia bills to insurers while MultiPlan and Private Healthcare Systems assisted the hospital system in overcharging patients.

Dr. Forman’s suit alleges that Sutter Hospitals billed insurers for anesthesia services that were never provided. In addition, the suit alleges that the hospital system’s anesthesia charges often significantly exceed the appropriate amount for a procedure.
