New Veterans Surgery Center in Texas Set for 2010; Veterans Express Mixed Feelings Over Facility

Harlingen, Texas, will be the site of a new $40 million surgery center for veterans in 2010, although some veterans say the surgery center does not replace the need for a veterans hospital, according to reports.

The surgery center, which will provide outpatient surgeries, such as cataract removals, diagnostic colonoscopies and prostate biopsies, and specialty and diagnostic services, such as pharmacy, digital x-rays, CT scans and MRIs, will eliminate 95 percent of veterans’ visits to San Antonio for medical care, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

While veterans said they are pleased with the plans for the surgery center, some said the area needs a veterans hospital to offer treatment for all problems, according to the Valley Morning Star.
